The value of volunteering with IREM®

Volunteering with IREM provides career benefits that extend beyond personal satisfaction. DISI Leader and CPM® Candidate Destiny Robinson shares her experiences as an IREM volunteer and offers advice for those considering it.

How has volunteering helped your career?

Volunteering has expanded my career in many ways. My professional journey really skyrocketed when I started volunteering with my local chapter. I’ve attended various events, met different people, and built relationships within my community. The growth I’ve experienced has been my biggest achievement. Receiving the DISI award for 2023-2024, becoming a DEI ambassador, and being featured in IREM content has been monumental for my career. It all started with choosing to volunteer.

What would you tell a next-gen audience about the benefits of becoming an IREM volunteer?

Get involved! Volunteering is a great way to jumpstart your career. You gain access to vendors, events, and colleagues that you may not otherwise encounter. You build relationships with community members beyond property management, creating a stronger network to support your profession. Whether it's job advancement or assistance with a project, the rapport you build is invaluable. If you're curious, start small by joining a committee. Every person brings unique insights, and your opinion matters. You might even aspire to become IREM President someday, but you have to start somewhere.

Continuous learning and skill development

IREM volunteers enjoy continuous learning and skill development opportunities. By engaging in volunteer activities, you deepen your understanding of the real estate management field and gain practical experience. Whether it's participating in educational events, or contributing to research projects, you’ll acquire knowledge and skills directly applicable to your career.

Insights from industry leaders

IREM asked 2021 IREM President Chip Watts, CPM®, CCIM, C2EX, AHWD®, about how volunteering shaped his real estate career, and what he would tell his younger self about becoming an IREM volunteer:

“There are many benefits to serving in a leadership position. By far, the biggest benefit is the people and the relationships that are made. These relationships can have a tremendous impact on your personal growth. Opportunities for travel and new business generation are great, but the relationships formed in leadership roles are invaluable. I would tell my younger self that the networking and relationship opportunities provided by being a leader in IREM were even better than I imagined.”

Beyond professional growth, volunteering with IREM offers a chance to give back to your community and make a positive impact. Through community outreach programs, advocacy initiatives, and charitable endeavors, IREM volunteers play an active role in improving the neighborhoods and cities they serve. By leveraging your skills and knowledge, you contribute to the development of sustainable, well-managed properties, creating a positive living and working environment for residents and tenants. The satisfaction from making an impact on people's lives is immeasurable.

Enhanced visibility

Volunteering with IREM boosts your profile within the real estate management community. By engaging in events, assuming leadership roles, and contributing to industry publications, you enhance your professional reputation, increase your credibility, and improve your career prospects. Being an IREM volunteer demonstrates your dedication to the industry and confirms your commitment to excellence.

Becoming an IREM volunteer brings a number of advantages. From expanding your professional network and gaining new skills, to positively impacting your community and earning industry recognition, volunteering with IREM can enhance both your personal and professional life. By committing your time and expertise to this dynamic profession, you embark on a journey of growth, learning, and meaningful connections.
