This webinar focuses on what a building owner needs to know with respect to how certain physical elements of your building may deteriorate and lead to increased risk (such as repair costs, safety-related liability, owner health and discomfort, and property damage), and the types of building system reviews that should be commissioned to mitigate these risks.  This presentation will address investigation types on various building envelope and structural building systems, provide high-level scope for the recommended reviews discussed, and recommend frequencies of investigations of the buildings.

  • A fundamental understanding of several major systems associated with many types of buildings
  • Simplified explanations of the mechanisms usually resulting in system deterioration
  • An understanding of how this deterioration affects risk
  • What can be done and by whom to determine when and how to maintain these systems to limit ownership risk
Michael Ball’s key skill set is an in-depth knowledge of building envelope systems and restorative work. He is a subject matter expert who is well known and respected in Alberta. Mike has been with Morrison Hershfield and in the building science industry since 2000. He has specialized in restorative work for most of his career with an emphasis on building envelope renewals (roofs, fenestration, wall cladding, etc.) and concrete repairs (parking garages, balconies, waterproofing, etc.). Mike’s involvement with projects starts at inception when he conducts investigations and forensic processes to identify severity and underlying causes related to building envelope failures towards ultimately providing an effective design for resolution. His mindset is to ensure that a facility’s restoration needs are met through effective design processes. He also provides building envelope construction administration and quality assurance. Mike is an ardent supporter of quality management practices as the quality of detailing and material compatibilities is integral to the success of restoration projects.
