Free Webinar – Federal and State Government Policymaking: Trends Affecting the Property Management Industry
Every year, certain issues move to the forefront of the federal and state legislative bodies. It is no surprise that you may see Congress or state legislatures introduce bills addressing the same topic. Some of the issues trending in the property management industry will be addressed in a webinar on June 5 that is free to all IREM members.
Ted Thurn, IREM Director, Government Affairs, will discuss rent control and landlord/tenant bills that have been introduced at the state level and IREM’s response to the proposed legislation. Ryan Huffman, CPM, Chair of IREM’s Federal Housing Advisory Board, will discuss the Board’s activity while in D.C. addressing assistance animals, insurance for federally assisted properties in disaster areas, and the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
IREM Leadership Attends NAR Legislative Meetings
IREM leadership attended NAR’s Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo May 13-18 in Washington, D.C. The meetings were an opportunity for IREM members to take part in special issues forums, participate in committee meetings, and make visits to Capitol Hill to meet with Members of Congress. Relevant issues on the NAR legislative agenda included the National Flood Insurance Program, assistance animals, and discriminatory housing practices under the Fair Housing Act. The meeting also allowed IREM members the opportunity to network with NAR members and other stakeholders in the real estate industry.
New York Members Urged to Contact Their State Legislators
Several bills have been introduced into the New York state legislature which would expand rent control/stabilization requirements across the state. IREM HQ and the New York Chapters worked together to develop and distribute a call to action asking all members in New York to urge their state legislators to oppose this misguided legislation.
If you live in New York and have not already participated, be sure to make your voice heard
IREM will continue to monitor these and the more 50 other rent control bills that have been introduced across the country.
