Real Estate Roundtable virtual annual meeting
On June 11 and 12, the Real Estate Roundtable (RER) held its Annual Meeting online, with special guests Secretary of the Treasury Mnuchin, Citigroup’s Raymond McGuire, Global Head of Corporate and Investment Banking, Representative French Hill (R- AR), Charlie Cook, editor of the Cook Political Group, and Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The Annual Meeting of the RER addressed both the myriad of economic and health issues impacting the real estate industry due to the coronavirus pandemic and what steps both the RER and the broader real estate industry can take to address systemic racism.
Policy highlights from the meeting include:
- Secretary Mnuchin explained that the Administration is considering pandemic risk insurance and business liability protections. The Secretary also noted that the Administration is very interested in an infrastructure bill and indicated there should be more flexibility in mortgage relief for multifamily properties.
- Charlie Cook provided his insights on the upcoming election and noted the importance of independent voters in the presidential race.
- Representative Hill discussed the likelihood of another coronavirus relief bill this summer and that Congress is currently examining where there are gaps in need. Two issues Representative Hill cited were both business continuity coverage and pandemic risk insurance.
- Both Secretary Mnuchin and the Tax Policy Committee discussed recommendations for the Main Street Lending Program to better ensure that businesses that need it have access to capital.
- The RER released a statement the Real Estate Roundtable Stands in Solidarity Against Racism and Injustice preceding the Annual Meeting and at the meeting interviewed Citigroup’s Raymond McGuire to discuss the real estate industry’s role in addressing racial injustice.
