IREM Announces 2021 Public Policy Priorities
IREM has finalized our 2021 Public Policy Priorities. The public policy priorities will assist in setting the agenda for our Advocacy Impact Day, Congressional In-district Meetings, Congressional Briefing, and for supporting grassroots efforts on state and local issues. A new policy priority for 2021 is our Pandemic preparation and response policy. It urges all real estate managers to familiarize themselves with the dangers associated with a possible pandemic and assess the impact one could have on their businesses, properties, employees, and clients.
Policy Priorities
IREM Urges Flexibility in Rental Assistance
On January 28th, IREM joined eleven other real estate organizations urging the Departments of Treasury and HUD to provide clear guidance to state and local governments when distributing federal rental assistance funds. The letter asks them to ensure that the funds would be used to pay rental arrears, to ensure rental housing properties remain financially viable. We also urged flexibility for landlords to obtain resident consent, especially when delinquent tenants may be avoiding landlord communications. The letter also requests that the existing Treasury FAQ be updated to reflect that.
We continue to urge that successful programs will ensure property owners are made whole, and renters aren’t saddled with outstanding debt.
