State No Longer Requires Apartment Buildings With 3 to 20 Units to Install Fire Sprinklers WBAY.com (WI) (08/17/17) Bagenda, Cearron

Wisconsin is no longer enforcing a requirement that fire sprinklers be in apartment communities that have between three and 20 rental units. State law says fire sprinklers are required in buildings with more than 20 apartments. Wisconsin's Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) determined the requirement for buildings with less than that cannot be enforced due to a law passed six years ago. The law says state agencies such as the DSPS cannot write regulations more restrictive than Wisconsin law. Lt. Cody Johnson of the Green Bay Metro Fire Department laments, ""When they're talking about rolling back the requirements on fire sprinklers, it's a little disheartening because we know and we understand the value to the fire sprinklers as far as life safety goes." According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), sprinklers keep a fire in the room where it starts 97 percent of the time. Such systems are not meant to put out fires but instead to keep them contained so it doesn't spread to other parts of the building.
